SUMMARY:Guiding our Children to a Mathematical Future
DESCRIPTION:A 3-PART WORKSHOP specifically designed for parents of\nELEMENTARY AGE children\nTHIS WORKSHOP WILL INCLUDE: \nOCT 30 – SESSION 1: Come join us for an interactive evening to learn about how current research into the development of mathematical thinking impacts how we teach math to our students\, in particular how we teach computation. Participants will leave with an understanding of math development from preschool years up through the elementary years\, why our teaching strategies might look different than when you were in school\, and tools we can use as parents to help our kids strengthen their math learning including games that YOU will make and take home with you. \nNOV 6 – SESSION 2: In Part 2 of our series\, we will build upon learning from session #1 as we explore research that focuses on multi-digit computation and we’ll extend our understanding from number sense and math facts (session 1) to place value understanding as it relates to computation. We will explore how this understanding develops from a very young age\, long before we would expect our children to be computing with larger quantities.  Parents will leave with a better understanding of current practices as well as tools to support their students and games to play at home. \nNOV 13 – SESSION 3: In the last class of our series we will pull together and apply our learning from the first two sessions to further develop and build upon our understanding of how young children develop mathematical understanding.  During this class\, we will explore a wide variety of commercially available games to become critical consumers and value the role of game play in developing math skills.  Come ready to PLAY!  We will also make games for everyone to take home and you will leave with a long list of games to add to your shopping wish lists and thrift store look-fors! \nREGISTER\nLimited childcare available for $5/child/night (select when registering

SUMMARY:How to Raise An Adult
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT! COLLECTING WAITING LIST\nBreak Free of the Overparenting Trap & Prepare Your Kid for Success:       A community conversation with best-selling author Julie Lythcott-Haims\n\n7:00 p.m. – Lythcott-Haims presentation\, immediately followed by Q&A/discussion\n8:30 p.m. – Books available for purchase/book signing; refreshments\n8:30-9:45 p.m. – Space available for parent groups and book clubs to meet and discuss\n\n \nIn How to Raise an Adult\, Julie Lythcott-Haims draws on research\, on conversations with admissions officers\, educators\, and employers\, and on her own insights as a mother and as a student dean to highlight the ways in which overparenting harms children\, their stressed- out parents\, and society at large. While empathizing with the parental hopes and\, especially\, fears that lead to over helping\, Lythcott-Haims offers practical alternative strategies that underline the importance of allowing children to make their own mistakes and develop the resilience\, resourcefulness\, and inner determination necessary for success. Relevant to parents of toddlers as well as of twentysomethings— and of special value to parents of teens. \n  \nSpecial thanks to Dawson school for hosting this FREE event for the public.  REGISTER HERE is necessary to reserve your spot. \nPEN Book Group Coordinator\, Fawnda Hathaway\, will be on hand to help organize groups based on Lythcott-Haims book.  A book signing will follow the presentation. \nDOWNLOADABLE FLYER
