In this 3-week workshop exploring our cell phone use, our kids’ usage, and the latest neuroscience around screen addiction we will:

  • explore our relationship with our phones
  • consider the effects of screen use on child development and parenting
  • learn how persuasive technology exploits our psychological vulnerabilities and makes these devices so addictive
  • develop a family plan for how to create healthy screen habits

Week 1
Participants will survey and reflect on their own phone use, as well as learn about persuasive technology and about the psychology behind screen addiction.

Week 2
Participants will learn about child and teenage brain development and about the effects of screen time on kids’ well-being. 

Week 3
Participants will set goals, develop strategies, and learn about resources to develop a plan for creating healthy screen habits.

FACILITATOR BIOS
Michelle Albert is a Teaching Associate Professor at CU Boulder. In her upper division class, Social Media and the Mind, students consider how phones and social media affect our mental health and well-being as well as learn about the persuasive technology that makes these devices so addictive. Michelle has also taught in multiple bridge programs at CU to help incoming students acclimate to college life. She is an active volunteer with CU’s Restorative Justice program and with the Boulder DA’s office Restorative Justice program. 

Dan Fox, LPC has spent the past 15 years helping adolescents (and their families) with the work of growing into healthy, happy adults. He uses a variety of approaches to help teens and families get more functional and feel more successful. Some clients do better when the work is done out of the office. Some benefit from Dan’s short-term, cognitive-behavioral interventions. For other clients, Dan approaches ongoing therapy from a Humanistic and Gestalt view. He provides talks and workshops for schools, summer camps, and other organizations seeking to understand adolescents and help them grow up.
